salishan Place by the River
Envisioned in partnership with the four land-based q̓ic̓əy̓ (Katzie), q̓ʷɑ:n̓ƛ̓ən̓ (Kwantlen), Máthekwi (Matsqui) and se’mya’me (Semiahmoo) First Nations, the salishan Place by the River stands as a tribute to local First Nations culture. The facade's patterned complexity tells a story of tradition and skill, echoing the timeless art of basket weaving. The colours are drawn from the earthy tones of local clays and soils, while the building's form and material palette harmonize with the natural landscape. Green roofs and wooden columns pay homage to a deep respect for the environment, rooting the structure in its cultural and ecological context. This museum is more than a building; it's a narrative tapestry, interlacing the threads of heritage, community, and land into a place of learning and legacy.
